Two California high school students lost fingers on Monday during a school-sponsored game of tug-of-war, according to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
The game was apparently part of South El Monte High School?s Spirit Week festivities, and took place during lunchtime. Two unlucky students ? one boy and one girl ? had their fingers torn off, according to the Los Angeles County fire department, which arrived on scene at 12:20 PM.
Officials did not clarify exactly how many fingers were lost or who won the bout.
?Fingers (were) amputated during some type of tug-of-war,? said Fire Captain Miguel Garcia in a statement. ?They were transported by ambulance to a trauma center.?
Neither the fire department nor the school has explained how the injuries were sustained or how many other students were involved. No one else was injured, however.
?At this point we?re trying to find out more information,? said School District Assistant Superintendent Edward Zuniga in a statement.
In light of the incident, the school district will review its policy on tug-of-war games, he said.
