Siena (1-1) defeated UCF (1-1) 7-4 Saturday, beating the Knights for the first time since 2005.
Despite having more hits than Siena, the Knights couldn't overcome the three-run deficit that was set early on. UCF finished with 10 hits while Siena had eight hits. The Knights left 12 players stranded on base in the game.
?We didn't do the fundamental aspects of game of baseball. Whether it's pitching or base running or defense or hitting. Siena, to their credit, they played better. They rose up to the big two-out hits and they took advantage of the opportunities that we gave them,? head coach Terry Rooney said.
Sophomore Eric Skoglund had a rough start as he walked four straight Saints and let up three runs in the first inning.
The Knights also struggled to score runs. UCF left the bases loaded in the seventh and eighth inning.
Freshman Tyler Martin made his first appearance as a Knight Saturday night. He relieved Skoglund, who pitched four innings, walked four batters, allowed three earned runs and struck out one batter.
Martin pitched for an inning before redshirt senior Chris Matulis stepped on the mound. In the four innings that Matulis pitched, he allowed four hits and one run while striking out four Saints.
Sophomore JoMarcos Woods and senior Chris Taladay each had solid performances Friday and Saturday night. Taladay went 3-for-3 Saturday afternoon and added one run and one RBI, while Woods went 2-for-5 and had two runs. On Friday night, Taladay went 3-for-5 and three RBIs while Woods went 4-for-4 and scored three runs.
The Knights will look to bounce back from the loss on Sunday at 1 p.m. as they host the Saints for the series finale.?
