What is Combatives?

What is Combatives? Combatives is a modern term used to describe the combative arts, military arts, or simply put; Martial Arts. Really, that's what martial arts really is, the arts pertaining to warfare and the military.

The choice of "martial" arts should have, and still should be understood to define anything and everything that goes with battle. However, If reality is what is commonly known to be true or understood among those in the realm of Combatives and it's teaching, then Combatives is hand-to-hand fight training, to include weapons such as a knife or stick. Handgun disarms will definitely be included in a good Combatives program, but typically when you get into the actual firing of the weapon, the term Combatives is no longer applied, and you then get into marksmanship.

Is marksmanship a part of the Combative Arts? Well yes, of course it is. But in the Army, we don't call it Combatives. Martial Arts used to be Combatives, and literally martial arts is the same as the Combative Arts, but because of McDojo's calling rehearsed katas and forms (without practical applications), martial arts, somebody had to go and change the name to get their point across.
