Volvo V40 Cross Country coming to India in 2013

?
? Volvo has so far been a four-model brand in India ? the S60 and S80 saloons as well as the XC60 and XC90 SUVs being their only offerings here. While the latter has been discontinued, the other three continue to be the face of Volvo in India. Touted to sell about 800 units by the end of calendar year 2012, Volvo's operations in India are about a tenth the size of the market leader, BMW. But that might change with the entry of the V40 Cross Country. To be Volvo's cheapest offering in India, cheaper than even the S60, the V40 is likely to be priced in the region of Rs 22 to 26 lakh. Volvo will bring it in as a CBU initially, but is expected to assemble it in the coming years as the company is actively scouting for locations for an assembly plant. According to a senior Volvo official who spoke to BSMOTORING.COM, the V40 Cross country will be launched in the first quarter of 2013 (calendar year) and deliveries will begin in the second quarter of the same year. Based on the recently launched V40 hatchback, this five-door BMW X1 and Audi Q3 competitor gets a few updates to make it look more rugged than the V40. Apart from skid plates in the front, the Cross Country gets new bumpers, new daytime running lights and grille. Roof rails and side inserts round up the look of this 'macho' V40. Ground clearance has been increased to 173 mm while it gets differently designed alloy wheels as well. The V40 Cross Country is offered with Haldex all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive options, though we believe it's the latter that may be offered here to keep the price tag in check. Motor options are likely to be the 2.0-litre D3 model producing 150 bhp with a six-speed automatic for the moment and possibly a 177 bhp version of the same called the D4. A 180 bhp, turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol called the T4 may also be under consideration, but at a later date.

Slingbox 350 and 500 show unannounced in Best Buy, flaunt 1080p and builtin WiFi

You might say Dave Zatz just had a happy accident. While he was hunting for the as yet unofficial Logitech Harmony Touch in Best Buy, he discovered the Slingbox 350 and 500 -- two more living room gadgets that have yet to receive an official introduction. The placeshifting hubs both look to be major improvements over the aging Slingbox Pro HD and Solo, making 1080p streaming available as long as the connection is up to snuff. Those who spring for the 500 should also get long overdue support for WiFi without having to use a wireless bridge, although they may miss the Pro HD's ATSC tuner. Outside of the networking, Sling Media is making expansion its upsell angle: the 500 supports USB media sharing and HDMI, while the 350 has to make do with whatever can pipe through its component and composite jacks. Zatz was unfortunately foiled in an attempt to buy one of the new Slingboxes and couldn't get final pricing, but Best Buy's suggestion to try again around mid-October hints that we won't have long to wait for a much-needed upgrade to our remote TV viewing.

Shortage of Engineers Is Causing 'Crisis' In Tech Industry
A lack of qualified workers in the tech industry is causing a crisis, says Microsoft. The firm has started lobbying in Washington, calling for a new approach to science, technology, engineering and math teaching at schools, and warning that if changes are not made, the U.S. will lose out to other, better-prepared nations.

We're Not Really Teaching Our Students to Read Correctly

Why is it that in the 21st Century and with all of the vast resources available to us, our children are becoming worse and worse readers and high school drop out rates are at an epidemic level. This isn?t rocket science, it?s READING? something that every single man, woman and child should be able to do.

As a mom and a businesswoman, I have seen the devastating effects of poor readers, in school and in business. The hit to one?s self esteem when not truly literate is enormous. Statistics I?ve seen indicating that about 85% of all juvenile offenders are illiterate are tragic, to say the least.

I started researching this area many years ago and was shocked to discover that the centuries-old method of teaching one the sounds of the alphabet letters and their combinations had been all but been destroyed in the 20th Century. Apparently the old adage, ?if it ain?t broke, don?t fix it? didn?t apply to teaching reading.

In my research, I found that at the turn of the 20th Century, new concepts of ?whole language? and ?sight word? were introduced to our children as a way for them to learn to read. However, as able as some might be to memorize key words, memorization did not help them sound out every new word they would encounter and as a result, a staggering percentage of high school seniors only read at 4th or 5th grade levels!

We can and must turn this around. Teaching reading is actually easy, if you have the right tools and the rewards for both the student and the coach are enormous. But, this does entail some time from both the student and the coach? about 3 hours a week can achieve tremendous results, over about a 10 week period.

An older sibling or a parent can easily and effectively tutor a student to become a strong and proficient reader and the boost to that student?s morale is more than worth the small amount of time required. There are 5 essential ingredients to successful phonics instruction: 1. phonemic awareness (the ability to notice and work with the individual letter sounds); 2. phonics (the relationship between the letters and the individual sounds); 3. fluency (the ability to read words quickly and accurately); 4. vocabulary (the words we need to know to adequately communicate) and 5. text comprehension (understanding the meaning of the words spoken or written).

Deleting any one of these 5 components to reading instruction is a tremendous disservice to those needing to learn to read but these points are not necessarily being taught in every classroom and that?s not necessarily the teacher?s fault. Our teachers aren?t even being taught to teach reading properly. How can throwing some words on the classroom walls and having the students memorize them be considered teaching them to read? How do they understand the words they?re reading if they?re not looking up the words in dictionaries?

Only when we help our children become strong, proficient readers will we actually see them thrive as students and only then will we see them be afforded the full education they deserve in order to become strong, productive individuals.

Who's watching? 3-D TV is no hit with viewers

Only 2 percent of TVs in American homes were able to show 3-D last year, according to IHS Screen Digest. That's about 6.9 million sets out of 331 million installed. (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)

(AP) ? Phil Orlins knows everything about producing TV in three dimensions. The ESPN producer has captured the undulating greens of Augusta National and the flying motor bikes of the X-Games for ESPN's 3-D channel. But he can only guess how well his shows resonate with viewers. That's because 3-D audiences are so small they can't be measured by Nielsen's rating system.

"The feedback on The Masters was fast and furious. You could go on Twitter at any moment, and there'd be comments coming in every minute about 3-D coverage," said Orlins while giving a tour of a production truck at this summer's X-Games. "But then you go to some other events where it's pretty quiet."

Orlins' problem is that fewer than 115,000 American homes are tuned into 3-D channels at any one time. That's less than a hundredth of the 20.2 million-strong audience that saw television's highest-rated show "NCIS" this week. 3-D viewership is so tiny that The Nielsen Co.'s methods are unable to capture any meaningful data about viewers' programming preferences.

ESPN 3D is one of nine 3-D channels that launched in the years following the late 2009 release of James Cameron's "Avatar." The 3-D blockbuster won three Oscars and ranks as the highest-grossing film of all time, garnering $2.8 billion at the global box office.

"Avatar" was supposed to change everything. Enthusiastic television executives expected the movie to spur 3-D's transition to American living rooms, boosting sales of new TVs and giving people a reason to pay more for 3-D channels.

That never happened.

Only 2 percent of TVs in the U.S. are able to show 3-D programming, according to the most recent data from research firm IHS Screen Digest. That's about 6.9 million sets out of 331 million. After this year's Christmas buying rush, IHS expects the number of 3-D-capable televisions installed in homes to jump to 19.3 million, mostly because 3-D viewing technology is being built into most new large-screen TVs. But even with the jump, 3-D TVs will amount to less than 6 percent of all sets.

"We've learned with every passing day that we were ahead of the curve further than we thought we were," said Bryan Burns, the business leader for ESPN 3D. "We hit the on-ramp earlier than we realized at the time."

Why 3-D television hasn't become a national craze is a mystery to some in the industry, considering the wide acceptance of 3-D movies at theaters. But 3-D content is expensive to produce, and as a result there's not a lot of it. Some of the content isn't very good. Some people find the special glasses required for 3-D TV uncomfortable. And many wonder whether it's worth the extra cost.

"It was kind of fascinating to me, but it's not all there," said Tim Carter, a graphic designer in Sarasota, Fla., who bought a large, high-end 3-D TV with other high-end features last year for about $1,800.

Today, the average 42-inch 3-D television costs about $900, according to IHS. They contain a high-tech chip and software that translates 3-D video feeds into the right- and left-eye images that create the 3-D effect for people wearing the right glasses. In some cases, special glasses can cost an extra $50 or so.

Watching home movies on disc requires a 3-D Blu-ray player that can cost another $120 and each disc set purchase runs around $27, according to IHS. (3-D movies are usually bundled with other discs.)

While operators like DirecTV and Comcast Corp. don't charge specifically for channels like ESPN 3D, they are generally bundled in packages that require other spending. At DirecTV that means a $200 high-definition digital video recorder and $10 per month for HD service. For Comcast, that means a minimum $65-per-month digital starter package with HD service costing another $10 a month.

All that for the privilege of watching 3-D at home in your pajamas.

Due to the cost, Carter said he's mainly sampled free 3-D movie trailers provided on-demand by his cable TV company. A trailer for the latest "Transformers" movie didn't make him more enthused. "One of the robots pops out at you, and it felt forced." ''It's not consistent," he said, noting that 3-D effects aren't noticeable much of the time. He said he's not knocking the technology, he's just disappointed with the way it's being used.

Nowadays, 3-D is just one feature on TVs with bigger screens. It is usually grouped with other upgrades that include motion-smoothing technology and light-emitting diodes that are smaller, more energy efficient and display color contrast better than traditional liquid crystal display sets. It's difficult to isolate how much 3-D adds to the price tag of an individual set because of this bundling, but according to IHS the average 42-inch set with 3-D is about $200 more than a similar-sized one without. Some 3-D TVs, however, can be found for cheaper than others of the same size.

"There's very little direct consumer demand," said Tom Morrod, a TV technology analyst with IHS in London. Some consumers buy TVs which happen to have 3-D, but they don't bother to get the glasses needed to watch them, he said.

"They don't see a value with it. Consumers associate value right now with screen size and very few other features."

Sluggish demand for 3-D on TV has caused programmers to hit pause on rolling out new shows and channels.

In June, DirecTV turned its 24-hour channel, n3D, into a part-time network that only shows special event programming like the Olympics, in part to avoid the heavy use of reruns caused by a lack of new material. Last year, AT&T dropped ESPN 3D from its lineup, saying the $10 per month cost to subscribers wasn't justified given low demand.

So far, ESPN 3D is the most aggressive network in terms of shooting original 3-D productions. It has about 140 per year. It also has the widest distribution, according to research firm SNL Kagan, no doubt because popular sports network ESPN includes it in negotiations with distributors. Though few own the hardware to watch the channel, ESPN 3D now pipes into 60 million U.S. homes.

Without extra subscriber fees, it could be difficult to make a big business out of 3-D production, especially because it's more expensive than 2-D. Every 3-D camera set-up requires two cameras. They have to be mounted on a special computerized rig that aligns them. And someone in a back room has to adjust a knob that determines how cross-eyed the lenses are. That can require twice the manpower for the same camera position, boosting costs when revenues aren't going up very much.

Advertising, the other pillar of the TV channel business, is also hampered because of the lack of audience data.

That has resulted in an odd arrangement. Companies that run advertisements on ESPN 3D, like movie studios, actually have their ads played a second time in 2-D on ESPN and other channels so they can meet their goal of reaching a measurable number of people, Burns said. That uses up 2-D commercial airtime that might have been sold to other customers.

While he wouldn't say if it's profitable, Burns said ESPN 3D is still a revenue-generating business that is "doing well," because of how the network accounts for revenue from distributors and advertisers.

3-D TV is not a complete bust. Burns and others expect that as more TVs are sold with the capability, the more viewership will grow, just like it did for high-definition sets and programs a few years ago.

"It took five years before reporting systems caught up and we knew who actually had the service," Burns said of the launch of HD. "It's not unfamiliar territory to us. We've been down this road before."

For TV signal providers, carrying 3-D channels before they really become mainstream wins them points with their savviest technophile customers, the kind who jumped on the HD bandwagon early ?a decade ago.

In many ways, though, the comparison to HD isn't a good one.

Watching 3-D is a problem for about 6 percent of Americans with certain eye problems, according to Dr. David Maino, a professor with the Illinois College of Optometry. They simply can't see in 3-D or suffer dizziness or nausea when watching.

And it won't get the same push that HD got by the hundreds of TV stations that switched to high-definition broadcasts in the last few years. Nor will it benefit from the nation's switch from analog to digital TV broadcasts in 2009.

Another awkward point: some people just don't like 3-D. In a phone survey last November of 1,300 Americans who had seen 3-D TV, Leichtman Research Group found that 38 percent rated it poorly at 3 or below on a scale of 10. That's twice as many as rated it excellently, at 8 or higher.

That's a knock against 3-D that HD didn't have.

"It's one of those examples where seeing isn't believing, thus far," said Bruce Leichtman, president of Leichtman Research. "That's certainly not a great place to start."

JT's ?800k legal bill - The Sun

JOHN TERRY faces a mega ?800,000 bill over the Anton Ferdinand race row.

And Chelsea will not pay a penny of it.

JT was ?disappointed? after the FA yesterday found him guilty of racially abusing the QPR defender.

He copped a four-game ban and an FA record ?220,000 fine.

But that is only a fraction of the sum Chelsea?s captain spent fighting his case.

Terry, 31, has run up legal fees estimated at ?750,000 battling his criminal and FA charges.

He hopes to recoup around ?400,000 from the court case, where he was found not guilty.

But the ex-England skipper is now liable to pay the costs of the FA hearing, too, said to be at least ?200,000.

That brings his total bill to a whopping ?770,000.

But if Terry decides to continue his fight and appeal against the FA?s punishment, his legal bill will rise even further.

A statement issued on his behalf said: ?Mr Terry is disappointed that the FA commission has reached a different conclusion to the clear not guilty verdict of a court of law.

?He has asked for the detailed written reasons of the decision and will consider them carefully before deciding whether to lodge an appeal.?

Terry has 14 days from receiving the FA commission?s written report to decide what to do next.

His fine and ban will be suspended until any appeal is heard, the 14 days expire or Terry announces he will not appeal.

But if the Blues defender does appeal and loses, the FA?s punishment could be increased.

Terry announced on Sunday he was quitting international football, claiming the FA had made his position in the England team untenable by continuing to persue the charge against him.

Westminster Magistrates cleared him in July of racially abusing Ferdinand, 27, after Chelsea?s Premier League clash at QPR last October.

Terry admitted in court using obscene words towards Ferdinand ? but not as a racist insult.

A club statement last night said: ?Chelsea Football Club notes and respects today?s decision.

?We also recognise that John has the right to appeal that decision.

?It is therefore inappropriate for us to comment further on the matter at this time.?

It's Time to Get Online ? Sharecare.com Blog

If you?re on the fence about building your online presence, it?s time to hop off and join the conversation. Primary care pediatrician Claire McCarthy, MD, recently blogged about the importance of doctors interacting online. Dr. McCarthy, who was named one of SharecareNow?s Top 10 Online Influencers in Children?s Health, is an avid blogger and a senior pediatrics editor for Harvard Health Publications. When it comes to the online space, McCarthy says, ?It has become increasingly clear to me that I need to be there?and that more doctors need to be there with me.?

She makes a good case about the online opportunities?and obligations?for medical professionals. Here are a few of McCarthy?s reasons for being active on the Web:

1. Patients are online.
The number of social media users continues to grow. There are more than 550 million daily active users on Facebook alone, according to the site?s most recent statistics. When patients get sick, they turn to their social networks and Google for answers. McCarthy said she often hears patients say, ?I looked it up online.? If the Internet is becoming a key resource for patients, then doctors should be part of it.

2. You don?t have to blog to have an impact.
Creating an online presence isn?t solely about writing content. Doctors can find and share useful information, or comment on worthwhile health topics. Sharecare hosts Twitter and Facebook chats that allow experts to connect directly with an engaged audience on topics from prostate cancer to plastic surgery to women?s health and fitness.

?As doctors, we have so much to bring to the conversation?and so much to gain,? says McCarthy.

3. Online interactions can complement a doctor?s office visit.
There?s a lot doctors want to say, do and teach patients during appointments, but time is limited. The online space is another medium to communicate with patients. Of course social media forums are not the place to give specific medical advice, but medical professionals can share information with patients to guide them in making health decisions.

Sharecare is a great place for you to start. You can create an online profile and participate in Sharecare?s interactive, social Q&A platform to help consumers live their healthiest life today!

Join the largest health conversation in 140 characters or less! Tweet what you want to talk about to @SharecareNow and let?s start chatting!

South Florida Classical Review ? Blog Archive ? For 25 years New ...

Elizabeth Hainen is principal harp of the Philadelphia Orchestra and has started a community program to provide harp lessons to public school students.

As an alumnus of the New World Symphony, Zeneba Bowers has established a successful traditional career as assistant principal second violin of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.

Not content to serve as lieutenant in a regiment of violins under the command of a conductor, Bowers has also struck out on her own. She founded the ensemble ALIAS, a venture in which musicians donate their services and profits go to charities. Lest one think that the group is once treated more n good intentions than quality music-making, ALIAS performances have reached such a high level that a recent recording has been nominated for a Grammy.

The young violinist promotes the ensemble relentlessly.

?We?re really heavy on the press, and when I say heavy I mean I call them until they get restraining orders,? she said. ?There?s still kind of a pull away in the classical field from advertising yourself or marketing. There?s an attitude that you?re dumbing it down, and I just could not disagree with that more.?

Her dual role, her aggressiveness as a promoter and lack of concern for maintaining the often stiffly formal protocols of classical music represents an ideal promoted by the New World Symphony, the Miami Beach ensemble for young conservatory graduates, as it tries to turn out musicians who can make classical music thrive in the 21st century.

The 86-member orchestra, founded in an old movie theater on Lincoln Road, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this season with an opening concert of Russian music led by Michael Tilson Thomas Saturday night [Oct. 6]. Yet the South Beach educational institution is also marking its quarter-century with renewed efforts to retool the traditional classical music format as well as helping young musicians find employment during a difficult, quickly changing period for symphony orchestras.

In the past decade, the Florida Philharmonic folded, as did orchestras in Honolulu, Syracuse and other cities. Opera companies in Boston, Baltimore, Orlando and elsewhere closed their doors. The Philadelphia Orchestra, one of the world?s great symphonic ensembles, declared bankruptcy. Audiences continue to grow grayer.

As for the younger generation, they pull music off the web and expect it to be free. The career path of the orchestral musician, never among the easiest ways to make a living in this country, was starting to look as promising as that of newspaper reporter or Blockbuster video store manager.

?That?s very much on everybody?s mind here,? said Howard Herring, the New World Symphony?s president and chief executive officer. ?We?ve seen orchestras go out of business. We?ve seen orchestras step back in terms of number of weeks and we?ve certainly seen salary decreases. We actually think that the New World Symphony is guiding our fellows to a place where instead of taking a negative approach to why it isn?t working, assess your talents, look to your responsibilities and then be prepared to represent the art form both as a great player and as a member of your community.?

With its high-tech new hall, the orchestra is experimenting with alternatives to the traditional full-length concert. It trains its young musicians in how to engage with audiences in a more informal, contemporary manner. They are coached in how to speak to audiences, how to talk to second-grade classes, how to be interviewed on the radio and mingle with donors.

?I think in the whole music profession there?s this idea that this is such a great tradition, and the future of the tradition depends on reimagining it and revivifying it,? said Tilson Thomas, the orchestra?s founder, artistic director and dominant personality, who is also music director of the San Francisco Symphony.

?This has to come from giving young people the opportunity to be part of that process. Not only are people focusing on the training that gives them the maximum competitive edge to go after these big orchestral jobs, but also they?re thinking of other opportunities of working in music. I think making people realize that if you really love music and you want to create an interesting life for yourself that there are a number of ways of doing that, not necessarily the traditional paths, and that New World enables you to explore some of those.?

Katie Wyatt

Among those choosing a non-traditional path is violist Katie Wyatt, who labored for years at her instrument in order to play in an orchestra. But after traveling to South America and seeing Venezuela?s famous El Sistema classical music program for poor children, she returned for her second season at New World with new ideas of what she wanted to do. ?My mind was made up that I was going to do more than take orchestra auditions, that I wanted to shape the way that people care about music in their community,? she said.

She called her teacher, Robert Vernon, principal viola of the Cleveland Orchestra, in tears. ?I thought I was failing him,? she said. ?I called him and said ?I?m so sorry. You?ve invested so much in me as a viola player, so much time preparing all this repertoire for the auditions, and now I really think that what I want to do is be a leader in music and social change,?? she said.

?He said, ?Katie, knock it off. Everything that we?ve been preparing you for has led you to this day. All of the passion that you have for music and the way that it has changed your life you will share with others and inspire others and be excellent on the job.??

Wyatt went on to found KidZNotes, an organization that provides free instruments, music lessons and ensemble training to poor children in Durham, North Carolina. This school year, the program will enroll 200 children. ?I wanted to shape how music could build a community for the good,? she said.
?
Tilson Thomas founded New World in 1987 at the old Lincoln Theater?home at the time to a colony of feral cats?with the backing of the late Carnival Cruise Lines founder Ted Arison. Aided by Arison?s generous financial backing, Tilson Thomas? prestige and the abundance of conservatory graduates chasing a tiny number of jobs, the orchestra quickly established itself as one of Florida?s top performing arts organizations.

Since that time, South Beach lost some of the edgy allure that had originally inspired fashion photographers to pose models against decaying Art Deco hotels. And as Lincoln Road settled into a comfortable existence as a place for dining, strolling and shopping, the New World Symphony left its drab hall, with its rabbit warren of practice rooms and offices, for a futuristic symphonic Taj Mahal designed by the architect Frank Gehry, with the latest in sound and video systems, auxiliary stages and Internet-connected practice rooms.

Among the traditional elements of the classical music experience that New World has sought to change is the stuffy formality of orchestral performances, which begin at a set point in the evening, require a ticket purchased in advance and consist of a pretty standard format of overtures, concertos and symphonies that would have been familiar to anyone attending a concert in the 1920s.

Since moving into its new hall, the orchestra has experimented with shorter, alternative concert formats intended to attract casual strollers in the Lincoln Road neighborhood in the manner of an art gallery. By the hard data collected so far, the innovative formats did exactly what they were intended to do: Bring in newcomers to the New World Symphony. Herring reels off the numbers: For 30-minute concerts performed a few times a night, 60 percent of the audience was new to New World (or ?new to the database,? as he puts it). For the Pulse concerts, in which lights are lowered and the orchestra performs a mix of club music and classical, it?s 40 percent. For short-but-substantial 60-minute concerts, it?s 25 percent. The concerts projected on the hall?s outdoor wall in front of picnickers in the adjacent city park attract an average of 1,500 people per concert, of which about half are new.

These newcomers are now targets of the orchestra?s marketing machine, starting with mail and email pitches, with possible follow-up phone calls. ?We want to bring those people back,? he said.

Of New World?s 900 or so alumni, the largest number have taken positions in American orchestras. Among these are the Boston Symphony with eight alumni, the Chicago Symphony with five, the Metropolitan Opera with five, the San Francisco Symphony with 13 and the Cleveland Orchestra with 10. Employing the largest number is the Kansas City Symphony ? dubbed ?New World Symphony West??-with a whopping 25, more than one fourth of its roster.

New World wouldn?t be successful in placing alumni in major orchestras if it just turned out PR-minded musical entrepreneurs. Achieving mastery of the horn, cello or clarinet to the level demanded by a top orchestra requires a level of commitment and discipline seen in few professional fields. At the Cleveland Orchestra, for example, everything depends on an audition of difficult solo works and excerpts from the orchestral literature, with the first round conducted behind a screen. There are no interviews. Such soft skills as the ability to speak to an elementary school class count for exactly zero.

?We have a very rigorous audition process,? said Gary Ginstling, the Cleveland Orchestra?s general manager and a clarinet alumnus of New World. ?It?s very traditional as far as orchestras go. There?s no doubt in Cleveland that we?re looking for musicians that are absolutely at the top of their field on their instrument.?

Yet once they?re in, he said, the Cleveland Orchestra can certainly utilize their community relations skills. ?We?re in a city that?s challenging economically, and the population is declining, so we?re trying to find ways to connect the orchestra with a larger group of people from northeast Ohio,? he said. ?We?ve really worked to connect our musicians with our audiences closer and giving them a chance to speak from the stage and engage with our donors and members of the public, humanizing and personalizing the members of the orchestra.?

The desire to make orchestral musicians an active part of their community has long been an essential part of the New World Symphony?s DNA. The harpist Elizabeth Hainen joined New World in its second year, 1988. Her memories include working on Mahler?s Symphony No. 5 (and hanging out at the pool) with Leonard Bernstein, whose advocacy of Mahler helped raise the composer?s work to the leading position it holds today. She went on to what for most New World members would be a dream job: principal harp of the Philadelphia Orchestra, which despite its financial troubles, continues to make great music as one of the nation?s great ensembles.

But in addition to her orchestral work, solo career and teaching responsibilities as chair of harp studies at the Curtis Institute of Music, she has established a non-profit group that provides harp lessons and access to harps for public school students.

?At the New World Symphony they gave us a lot of seminars and coaching, and it always made you very aware of where you came from,? she said. ?So you really feel, when you?re given such a gift as a big position like Philly, that I need to do something, I need to give back. It?s probably the most rewarding thing that I do.?

This season 31 new fellows, selected from more than 1,200 graduates of music conservatories, arrived in South Beach. They moved into small furnished apartments in two renovated hotels. Each receives a weekly stipend of $450. During the year they will receive private lessons from visiting members of leading orchestras, undergo training in dealing with the public, learn from psychologists how to handle auditions and work with contemporary composers.

The heart of the program is a full concert schedule, a fast-paced series of concerts that will throw many of them into the world of performing orchestral musician for the first time in music spanning the early Baroque to contemporary premieres. The musicians will perform under Tilson Thomas as well as a variety of well-known conductors from around the world this season, including St?phane Den?ve, Susanna M?lkki, Matthias Pintscher and composer John Adams.

In addition to the value and excitement of working with such top rank conductors, the typical New World fellow today is faced with two roles and an array of choices: the thrill of being part of the massed forces of a superb orchestra along with somehow carving out a career and achieving one?s personal career goals.

Amos Fayette

?I would love to play in an orchestra, but I?d like to do a little bit of everything,? said violinist Amos Fayette, who is now entering his second season with New World. Among the highlights of his first season, Fayette mentioned both the late-night Pulse concerts, and the performance of Mahler?s Ninth Symphony with Tilson Thomas.

?For me this was a very meaningful experience, exploring Mahler with someone who?s a real expert,? he said. ?That piece was kind of the culmination of everything we worked on through the year to gel the orchestra and treat the orchestra like a big chamber group.?

Yet Fayette also coached a gifted young violinist through the works of Bach, Mendelssohn and Paganini to the point that she could study with the concert violinist Elmar Oliveira at Lynn University. And he even managed a concert series, coordinating the Musicians? Forum series, which includes solo, chamber, jazz and pop performances.

?The definition of what it means to be an orchestral player is changing,? he said.

The New World Symphony opens its season 7:30 p.m. Saturday at New World Center in Miami Beach with Stravinsky?s Circus Polka and Petrushka and Tchaikovsky?s Symphony No. 4. nws.edu; 800-597-3331.

Article by Michael D. Hume, M.S.

Inspiring Relationships Start With Empathy

by Michael D. Hume, M.S.

Leadership expert James F. Hind, decades ago, said ?People want to know how much you care before they care how much you know.? I?ve found this to be extremely well-put and thoroughly true, and it?s led me to be an intense student of the way people express empathy. Leaders who seek to be more inspirational (many of my clients among them) would be well-served to heed Hind?s admonition. If you want to inspire someone, start by caring about them, and showing it.

You might own your own business, or your leadership mission might lie in the service of another organization; either way, you?ll be at your best as a leader when you can be inspiring. Before you can do that, you have to be personally inspired? and one of the best places to look for inspiration is in the best, strongest relationships you can develop. Those relationships are often founded upon, and generally held together by, mutual expressions of empathy.

Empathy is defined as the ability to recognize yourself in the other person. That means you have to have appreciation for two people: yourself, and the other. Someone who?s low in appreciation for both himself and others has no chance to occupy a strong enough ?trust position? with others to develop empathy, relationship, or inspirational leadership. Others will see him as a resource, maybe, based on what he knows? but his low appreciation is likely to lead them to see him in far more negative ways (as a competitor, or even an enemy). I call this type the ?Apathetic Victim,? and you don?t want to be in that category. You?d be self-concealing, generally critical, and competitive to the point of being seen as political in your behavior.

Some people have high appreciation for themselves, but low appreciation for others? I call that type the ?Arrogant Boss,? and her sense of entitlement is neither empathetic nor inspiring. Equally uninspiring is the ?Humble Servant,? which is what I call the type of person who?s highly appreciative of others but not so much of himself. He?s burdened by too much of a sense of obligation to be truly inspiring and empathetic.

The most empathetic and inspirational leaders are those who can combine strong self-appreciation with strong appreciation of others. They?re courageous, especially in seeking feedback and improving themselves. They?re curious about others, and are much more appreciative than critical. And they?re collaborative. These ?Empathetic Peer? types are well-positioned to be empathetic? and inspirational.

You can tell the Empathetic Peer by the way she expresses empathy easily and naturally in the course of nearly every conversation. You?ll hear her say things like ?I can see how frustrated you are about this? or ?I hear the excitement in your voice, it?s contagious!? The Empathetic Peer is always listening to the content of what you say, but she?s also always listening to the emotion you attach to the content and to how you?re feeling about what you?re saying. You want to tell her more. You tend to like her! She?s a person who gets to know you, and who always behaves as though you are more important than the information you know or the problems the two of you can solve together. And, as you get to know each other, a great relationship can develop which can (and often does) lead to mutual inspiration.

Empathy ? and the ability to express it ? is a great tool employed often and well by the inspirational leader. You can build the degree to which you come across with empathy, and your efforts to do so may pay the greatest dividends of any possible self-improvement initiative. Get a good coach (drop me a line), and start exercising your empathy. You?ll be glad you did, and so will the people in your life who might look to you for inspiration.
